To support modernization of the City Hall station on SEPTA's Broad Street Line, two of the four tracks will be closed for long-term outages. This necessitates improvements to Fairmount Interlocking and the installation of two-way signals on the express tracks.
The latest available information shows that proposals from contractors are due by September 1st, 2024.
This is of particular interest to me because I use the Fairmount [B1] station several times a week, which is the only station on this project to lose all local service for an extended period (in one direction at a time). The Fairmount station is also unlike other stations on the BSL in that it has Ridge-Spur [B3] service on a separate platform, and the plans hint at diverting Express [B2] service to this 2-car platform. This project is also scheduled at a time possibly overlapping the USA's 250th Anniversary, which is expected to draw many tourists to Philadelphia and add strain to the SEPTA system.
